Themis worked for two days straight on the new painting, sipping massive amounts of coffee, eating chocolates, and chain-smoking until his fingers turned brown. When he finished, he let the brush slip out of his fingers and zombie-walked toward the bed. He felt the world spin around and fell on the bed where he slept peacefully.

When he woke up, he sat back on his couch and stared at the painting. He had turned the canvas around and was looking at the empty back. He still had the picture on his mind clear as day, but he didn't want to look at the finished painting just yet. He didn’t feel ready. In his mind, the image was perfect. But what if the finished painting wasn’t as good as he thought it was? What then? All the doubts, all the bad feelings inside him would bubble over, and mess with his head. He couldn’t let that happen. So instead, he took a quick, icy shower and hastily walked out the door.

He found himself on the walkway by the dunes. It was night again. How many days had passed? he wondered. He didn’t know, he couldn't remember. His mind felt heavy and tired, and without realizing, he started to walk toward the city center. Something drew him there. It was a beautiful night, the summer was ending, and the people were starting to come back from their vacations. The bars were full of life and Themis enjoyed strolling past them, seeing all sorts of people just sitting and drinking, enjoying themselves.

Why not me? he wondered as he stared at the bright red door of a bar. The color of blood. The vibrating music was pulling him inside. He pushed the door and walked in. The place was filled with young people, talking and laughing and dancing.

He squeezed himself inside and signaled the bartender for a beer. Themis leaned on the bar and watched the crowd, all the people having a good time. All the girls . . . the girls, his isolation had made him forget about them. He watched two girls dance and smile, their bodies swaying. He finished his beer and ordered a double scotch on the rocks. Half an hour passed and the DJ changed the tune. The sweet soul sound of “I Don’t Know” by Ruth Brown flowed through the speakers. A strange serenity overtook him as he listened to the song. He lit a cigarette and felt the music clear his mind.

The two girls went and sat on the bar not too far away. He felt calm and cool leaning on the bar sipping his scotch.

A man’s drink, he told himself. The girls looked back at him and he smiled. One of the girls, a pretty brunette, stared at him, and not long after, the second girl joined in. A sly little smile on their faces. But Themis couldn’t stare back, he felt his stomach tied in knots; his eyes fell on the floor. There was something strange
